Is Watermelon Keto? This informative guide will help you to enjoy your favorite fruits while sticking to a keto diet!
Is Watermelon Keto?
Yes, watermelon is considered keto in very small amounts. Watermelon is a fruit that is almost entirely water- in fact, this melon is about 90% water! Even with that high water content, there are still carbs in this fruit. In order to enjoy watermelon while maintaining a keto diet, you want to take great care to water your portion sizes, or to carefully watch your carbs throughout the rest of the day.
There are so many different fruits out there and each of them has a different carb count. To help ensure you can enjoy your favorite foods while sticking to a low carb diet easier, I decided to make these keto food guides. These guides will help you so you can get more information on whether or not an item is keto-friendly, how much you should consume (if any), recipes containing that particular item and ways you can still get the flavor of this food or retain the health benefits.
Carbs in Watermelon
In about 1 cup of chopped watermelon, there’s 11.5 grams of carbs and only 0.5 grams of fiber. To calculate the net carb count, you will need to subtract the fiber from the net carbs. In watermelon, there are 11 grams of net carbs in 1 cup of chopped melon. To remain on a ketogenic diet, you want to keep your net carbs below 50 grams a day. One cup of watermelon would take up about 20% of your day’s carbs- so you can enjoy this fruit, but you want to be careful while doing so. It can be very easy to eat a large portion of watermelon without noticing it, so it is best to measure it out so you know that your portion sizes are going to keep you on the right track.
Benefits of Watermelon
Even though watermelon contains a large amount of water, there are several health benefits to this fruit. Not only will watermelon help to keep you hydrated, you will also get a dose of vitamins. Vitamin C and A are especially high in watermelon. There are also high levels of antioxidants in watermelon, which help to keep your cells healthy. Watermelon is naturally low in calories and fat. This melon helps to keep your kidneys functioning at a high level, it assists with heart health and it is also known to reduce your chance of cancer.
Keto Watermelon Recipe
My Spicy Watermelon Keto Margarita is one of my favorites. This drink combines smooth tequila and a jalapeno keto simple syrup– this gives the drink an excellent flavor profile as well as the perfect amount of kick. Lime juice, fresh watermelon and sparkling water bring the flavors together for a truly delicious low carb cocktail.
I also have a Keto Margarita and a Keto Mojito that I think watermelon would be a fantastic ingredient in. These drinks are light and refreshing, which fits the flavor of watermelon perfectly. Just add chopped and seeded watermelon to your blender or shaker- serve with brunch, at bridal showers or your next dinner party.
